HISTORY (Capital)
The Modern Age
With the Discovery of America in 1492 the Moderna Age begins and Seville is elevated, for more than two centuries, in port of the New World. In the Real Palaces of Seville the House of the Hiring was created in 1503, organism fundamental to regulate the mercantile, scientific and judicial relations with America.

In the first years of century XVI, the preoccupation to count in Seville with superior studies shaped in the foundation of the School Santa Maria de Jesus by Maese Rodrigo Fernandez de Santaella. This institution was the germ of the future Hispalense University.

In spite of the opulencia lived during the previous century, the Seville of century XVII cannot evade the serious economic crisis that at that time affected to Europe in general and Spain in individual. Seville, inflamed of contrarreformista spirit, is transformed city-planning into a city-convent. Barroca is doubtless the weight from the monk in Seville, gaining to Land pulse the qualifying one "of Maria Santísima".

With the transfer of the House of the Hiring and the Marine Consulate to Cadiz in 1717, Seville lost the monopoly of the Indian commerce and began its declivity.

It will be necessary to hope until second half of century XIX so that the city initiates a new expansion supported in the construction of the railroad and taking advantage of the demolition from its old walls. The city grows towards the east and the south, is decimonónico Ensanche, that is completed in the first decades of century XX with the buildings constructed in the occasion of the Latin American Exhibition of 1929 (Seat of Spain, Gardens of Maria Luisa).

After the Seville exhibition it undertakes the remodeling of its infrastructure: creation of the airport, hydraulic works of canalization of the river and their streams to restrain the disasters of the floods, network of street cars, etc. The city is sent as of years 60 to a true expansion that forms the present peripheral quarters. In 1992 the Universal Exhibition (Expo 92) in the Island of the Cartuja was celebrated. Seville enters century XXI totally remodelada and modernized.
