History of Utrera

Historically, the first certain news that it is had of the city dates from year 1253, when Alfonso X carries out the repartimiento of his earth considering it like a modest farmhouse defended by a castle. This one will not happen completely to Christian hands until the battle of Salty, in 1340. However, the archaeological vestiges attest a older past, being able to us to overcome to the Calcolítico (third millenium to of C.).

However, the Roman civilization turns out to be clearest, represented by an ample legacy that includes important cities, like Salpensa or Siarum. Both populations counted on an ample city-planning projection and also they coined own currencies.

In fact, there is one who being based on the evident Latin root of Utrera does not have disadvantage in granting a Roman origin to the present population, identifying it with Utraria - factory of Odres -. Corominas, however, it thinks that the name drift of Vultuaria - high land alluding to the orography in which it is nailed.

Of time visigoda is left burial rest of escatologia Christian that they change of sign after the Muslim invasion. During this time, it seems that the city was not more than a small arcade with a protection tower. Soon, day after day the distributed ones to populate Utrera had occasion to surround the village with walls and to transform the tower into Castle.

During s. XVI and XVII Utrera it experiences a great economic blossoming, that arrives at its summit with Felipe 11, then, in 1570 was the first population of the prosperous kingdom of Seville. But, the effects of the bubonic plague of 1649, that left decimated the population and the bad smaller policy of the Austrias, changed the panorama radically.

The hope put in s. XVIII in the informed reforms was frustada. The war of Independence aggravated the difficult situation still more, that it receives a new impulse with the family Block, with which old Villa begins to feel like city, pretension that does not obtain until the reign of Alfonso XII (1877).

Yet, until the civil war of 1936 Utrera it is present at the own convulsions of an agrarian society, with strong social tensions.

The civil war left to a wake of suffering and truncated families. Today, Utrera is a typical example of medium population, with something more than 46,000 inhabitants than they work to improve his destiny, putting the glance in a hopeful future.
