History of Palomares del Rio

The municipality of Pigeon houses of the River is located to the southwest of the Sevillian capital, in the Eastern of the region of Aljarafe and shown limit on the fertile valley of the Guadalquivir. Its population in 1.996 promoted 3,448 inhabitants.

These earth already were populated by the Romans and the Arabs, existing archaeological rest that therefore demonstrate it. According to some authors, the first name of the locality was Columbaria or Colomera, that means "pigeon houses" and it would stay until the arrival of the Muslims. These call Rauz, that is translated to the Castilian like "garden". The present denomination comes from times of Alfonso X the Wise person. The locality reaches certain development as of century XVI, thanks to its privileged location next to the river.

The urban nucleus is based in the gorge that draws up between the Guadalquivir and the Pudio River. The urban development of Pigeon houses has not taken place on the cornice (to the east), but towards the interior, in the direction of the Pudio River. The topographic characteristics have prevented historically the growth towards the north.

The first constructions of the urban helmet were the property of Cordova and the church (previous to century XIV), it seems that based on the old Arab nucleus, and the property the Chains (of century XIV), raised in the crossing of the ways of Coria-Seville and Almensilla. In centuries XVII and XVIII other olivareras properties around the church are built, until completing the number of six. It is defined the historical small village, constituted by the grouping of the same ones, the church and the houses of the laborers who are constructed in their surroundings, forming the Seat and the first streets. At the beginning of century XX, the urban helmet maintains the same structure, being located in the point of contact of seven rural ways, those of San Juan, Mairena, Almensilla, stop and under Coria, Gelves and the cattle route Cord of Ugena, constituting an authentic communications center. In the middle of the Sixties, the traditional helmet had only extended something in the South and southwestern directions, towards Coria.

From 1,970 important changes in the occupation of the municipal territory take place. Numerous urbanizations destined to second residence arise, constructed so much by unitary performances of a deprived promoter, without physical continuity with the old helmet and supported in the main highways (the Lagoon, Razo de Ugena, Pozoblanco, the Fence, Grande River, etc.), like by the spontaneous union of small promotions, constituting a species of extension of the old helmet (San Francisco, Great Jew, Jewish Boy, Cucadero, the Escobana, etc.). In all of them it dominates to the tipología of open apples and isolated unifamiliares houses, that them difference clearly of the rest of the town. They occupy of form disperses the sectors located to the west and to the south of the traditional urban helmet, in the exits to Coria and Almensilla.

The urban space of Pigeon houses is characterized at the moment by a strong dualidad between the historical helmet, organized around the singular constructions of the properties (occupy more of 50 % of its surface), and the great extension of the urbanizations, little articulated functional and tipológicamente with that one. Between both sectors there are some areas of extension, located fundamentally to the south and southwest of the helmet, but with a little excellent paper in the set of the urban structure. The small historical helmet practically disappears hidden in the plot of new residential developments that surround to him, based on tipologías standard other people's to the traditional ones.

Between its constructions of artistic historical interest it emphasizes the Parochial Church of Our Lady of the Star (to mudéjar, with reforms in centuries XVII and XVIII).
