History of Olivares

The municipality of Olive groves is located in the western sector of the province of Seville, belonging to the region of the Aljarafe. In 1.996 it counted on a population of 7,604 inhabitants.

The origins of this locality go back to very distant times. Apparently, the present nucleus was at Roman time a small called city Soberbina, that competed in importance with the locality of Heliche, that would end up absorbing it. In Olive groves they are left numerous rest of the Roman presence, like the aqueduct that supplied of water to Itálica and one old necrópolis in the Hill of the Heads. During the Muslim period one becomes the small farmhouse of Estercolines, that later becomes depopulated and disappears completely. It remains in the forgetfulness until Carlos I, in the middle of century XVI, grants to Pedro de Guzmán the Puebla Letter for his foundation, acquiring the present denomination.

The urban nucleus initiates its expansion in century XVI under the protection of the first count of Olive groves. In century XIX the urban plot based on its original nucleus begins to structure itself, the present Seat of Spain, point of confluence of the ways to Sanlúcar, Gerena, Albaida, Salteras and Villanueva. In its surroundings they were located to the church schoolboy, the Palace of Conde-Duque and the Cilla, surrounded by the houses of the agriculturists who cultivated adjacent earth. The transformation of the access roads to agricultural lands in streets on which the constructions lean has given rise to a nucleus of radial morphology that lasts at the present time.

The growth of the urban helmet from principles of century XX to years 60 takes place around two main axes (Sanlúcar-Gerena and Sanlúcar-Salteras). From there, the urban development includes the totality of the system radial, although limited by the physical conditioners of the Coriana stream (the east) and of the existing pending forts (to the west), by the location of the cemetery and the Salteras-Albaida highway to the north and by highly productive agricultural lands of the south. The urban growth of the last decades takes place of disordered form something, with one double direction, towards the east, until the limit of the Coriana stream, and towards the west, in the zone between the Pudio river and the highway of Salteras.

In Olive groves two areas are distinguished at the moment: The urban helmet or consolidated area, that is subdivided as well in Center (the Olive groves existing in 1.900), the West and the South, with great density of houses, and North and This, zone with some emptinesses without building. And the area of urbanizations, that is contiguous with the helmet in almost all its perimeter and that has been developed by means of different partial plans: Casablanca, the Drums, the Cover, San Benito, etc.

Olive groves are located closely together of the neighboring locality of Albaida of the Aljarafe. In all the urban helmet the residential construction predominates to unifamiliar, that coexists with traditional uses as small commerce in ground floor, oil mills and warehouses.

Between its constructions of artistic historical interest they emphasize the Colegiata of Santa Maria of Snows (century XVII), the Ducal Palace, the chapel of Vera-Cruz (century XVI), the Tower of San Antonio (of Arab time) and the rest of the Roman aqueduct.
