History of Martín de la Jara

The municipality of Martín of the Rockrose is located in the Southeastern sector of the province of Seville, being adjacent with the one of Malaga and belonging to the region of the South Mountain range. In 1.996 it counted on a population of 2,819 inhabitants.

The origin of this locality goes back to the Average Age, being born around an establishment on watch located next to the Dirt road from Seville to Malaga. It would count on the dedicated premises to shoe the cavalries and to take care of the travellers, as a sale and lodging. According to some authors, the proprietor of this establishment would be a certain Martín Angulo. Others think that that person was in fact a captain of the armies of Fernando III Santo, who repobló this place in the middle of a field of rockroses. These earth live until century XV in an border zone, little populated and uncertain, that does not allow the establishment of population of permanent form. The territory belongs during centuries to the House Ducal de Osuna, that is in charge to repoblar it. In year 1,837 the señoríos are abolen and its first city council is constituted.

The urban nucleus is located in a small valley in the middle of the South Mountain range. The old helmet seems to locate itself in the Southeastern sector of the population, nearest spurs of the hill and the channel of the stream. There the seat is located, around which the church, the City council and the Market are located.

Martín of the Rockrose is the point of confluence of diverse highways that communicate to him with Osuna by the northwest, with the Corrals by the southwest, Stone quarry by the northeast and Mountain range of Mares (province of Malaga) by the east. All these routes come together in a same point, located to the north of the old helmet, and have structured largely the later urban development. The locality presents/displays at the present time a quite compact morphology.

Between its constructions of artistic historical interest they emphasize the church of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Arc of Teja.
