The municipality of Mairena of the Aljarafe is located to the southwest of the Sevillian capital, in the heat of lines up of the Aljarafe. In 1.996 its population promoted 30,659 inhabitants. Its term is occupied by numerous residential urbanizations of recent construction, such as Aljarafe City, Green Simón, Cavaleri, the Marquess, etc.
The presence of the man in these earth goes back at least until Roman time, of which numerous archaeological rest corresponding to agricultural operations are conserved (villae). After their despoblamiento during the period visigodo, the Muslims found the locality of Maharana Al-Xaraf, that in 1.247 is conquered by Fernando III Santo. De corresponds in señorío to the lineage of the Alvarez Toledo, later Marquesses of the Farm and Counts of Cartaojal.
The locality has its origin in a Roman villa, transformed later into Muslim farmhouse and that, at Christian time, will give origin to two properties that constitute the support of the rural nucleus that needs several centuries to become urban. The first passage for it is the construction of a modest church to mudéjar in the place that today occupies the Parochial Church. The Alvarez de Toledo both build next to her a house-palace (the Great House or of the Virreina) in the crossing of more important ways, the one than unites San Juan de Aznalfarache with Almensilla and the one of Bormujos. The urban development takes place of linear form in the direction of San Juan, structured around two fundamental road axes, and with apples of great size.
The establishment cannot be considered urban until end of century XVIII, when it is satisfied a central nucleus to several representative buildings, the new Parochial Church, the Asián House, the Great House and the Prusiana. The territory is occupied of dispersed form by satately agrarian operations, polarized around the small villages of the properties (the Rosales, Green Simón, Colorado Valley), adjusting the ways to the limits of the different dominions. The abolition of the señoríos in century XIX causes the progressive abandonment of the great houses, orienting itself the development towards the construction of modest houses, that are colmatando the edges of great apples formed by the ways. All it has conformed a nucleus that never is lost absolutely its rural character, when being made up of four great irregular apples, with corrals in its central zones. During first half of century XX significant changes do not operate. It is constructed fundamentally in the outer facade of the perimetrales streets and throughout the ways of San Juan, Almensilla and Palomares.
The true urban development takes place as of years 60. The fort metropolitan impact of Seville causes that the growth of San Juan de Aznalfarache towards the southwest invades the term of Mairena, originating the quarter of Lepanto and the primitive Green Simón. The urbanizing process has continued in the later decades, getting to almost completely colmatar the northeastern sector of the term. Taking as it bases the nuclei from the olivareras properties they have been arising urbanizations and quarters like City Aljarafe, Cavaleri, Expo City, the Breezes, the Almendral, the White Valley, etc. Most of them they are located in both margins of the old way from San Juan to Mairena or in the surroundings of the highway from San Juan to Pigeon houses of the River, and in urban continuity with the nucleus of San Juan. The constructive tipologías are varied: plurifamiliares houses in blocks, leaned, unifamiliares unifamiliares isolated, etc. and with predominance of open apples.
In the limit Eastern of the term, next to the locality of Gelves and on the brink of madness shown the cornice of the Aljarafe is Green the Simón urbanization, formed by unifamiliares villas of high level. To the south of the historical nucleus also the urbanizations have arisen Staked from Marquess and Puebla of the Marquess, in the exit of the highway of Pigeon houses. Finally, in the northern end of the term, the industrial estate P.I.S.A. is located, that occupies a great extension. All this complex urban system is connected inner and with the bordering municipalities by means of an ample road network, in which they emphasize the new one via that it connects the Railcar of Coria with Mairena of the Aljarafe (arriving until the proximities of the historical nucleus) and the old highway from San Juan to Mairena, that exerts like estructurador axis of good part of the mentioned urban developments.
Meanwhile, the main body has had a parallel development. In years 60, in the exit of the urban center towards San Juan, the surroundings of Villa Campoalegre and the one of the Property are urbanized the Rosales, simultaneously that, in the southwestern end, arises Eurolivas, adopting the nucleus a morphology very extended. The growth intensifies and new peripheral quarters are created (Our Lady of the Rosary, in the exit of Almensilla), simultaneously that undertake the construction of some blocks in height, like in the lot of the Great House.
The small historical helmet of Mairena remains hidden in its plot, drowned by the new urban developments based on tipologías standard, other people's to the traditional nucleus. The historical absence of significant an urban space from the formal point of view, could have been the antecedent of the dispersed development of the last years.
Between its constructions of artistic historical interest it is possible to emphasize the Porzuna Property and the Parochial Church of San Ildefonso.
