The municipality of the Palaces and Villafranca is located in the suroccidental quadrant of the province of Seville, belonging to the region of the Low Guadalquivir. In 1.996 it had a population of 31,718 inhabitants, on whom 90 % lived in the municipal head. The term counts on other three organizations of population, directly related to the agricultural activity: the towns of colonization of the Trobal, Maribáñez and the Chapatales, arisen in 1.970.
The history of the Palaces goes back until the tartéssica time, when Searo was denominated, being red-baptize by the Romans like Searotinus. During the Muslim domination (Seracatin), a castle had to exist, that is conquered by Fernando III in the middle of century XIII. The locality loses its military character and is left, becoming cattle territory and of hunting. In the middle of century XIV, Pedro I the Cruel offer to construct in this zone a house-palace ("the Atalayuela") on the rest of the old Arab castle, as it calls to account during the seasons of montería. At the beginning of century XV, the property happens to belong to the Dukes of Arcs, leaving to be real palace to become a small rural establishment. Of parallel form, the locality of Villafranca of the Salty one is founded by king Alfonso XI, and given to Diego Lopez de Arnedo in 1.330. It is refunded to Corona at the end of century XVII. The two localities megre in a single constitutional City council in 1.836, happening to denominate the Palaces and Villafranca.
The original establishment is the one of the Palaces, occupying a small hill limited the south by inundables lands and the channel of the Sewer of the Side, to the north by the disappear stream of the Ray, and to the west by low territories of the salt marshes. The later urban development is going away to produce towards the east, following the way of Utrera.
In centuries XIV and XV, Villafranca of the Salt marsh would depend on the Palaces, constituting a dispersed establishment, occupied by dedicated shepherds the equine young, which they would plant his huts in the sunny skirt that descends smoothly towards the stream of the Ray, dividing the historical one of both establishments. In century XVII, the Palaces would occupy the original hill like urban establishment, totally being surrounded by the territory of Villafranca.
In century XIX, the union of both nuclei is materialized in the conformation of an urban axis cross-sectional, formed by the Seat of Spain and the streets Real Small spindle, Charco and Blas Infant, and located on the old channel that had constituted dividing the natural one of both establishments. Also power the axis the north-south, extending the present street Our Lady of the Aurora in Real of Villafranca and San Agustín. The central historical nucleus of the Palaces, the axes the East-West north-south and and the Seville-Cadiz highway have been the estructurantes elements of the urban plot until half-full of century XX.
In the last years, the urban growth has been very important and the expansion has taken place towards the east, on the highway of Utrera (Se-422), towards the west and the north, in the direction of Seville. This process is made by simple transformation of the title agriculturist, mainly with marginal constructions, of autoconstrucción, that the City council has urbanized a posteriori. Also new municipal quarters have arisen and from official protection (Working, Virgin San jOse of Araceli, the Flowers). In the new developments they dominate extended and regular apples, oriented mainly of this a the west and north to the south. The northern growth has an urban plot slightly more irregular than the Eastern sector.
The passage of the N-iv highway has divided historically the urban nucleus in two sectors (western and Eastern), although recently has been constructed a variant of the same one to the west of the population. On the contrary, the Seville-Cadiz Freeway develops its layout to the east of the Palaces. The channel of the Sewer of the Side supposes another barrier to the urban growth by the south.
Between its constructions of artistic historical interest the White is possible to emphasize the Parochial Church of Santa Maria (century XVII), the hermitage of Our Lady of the Aurora and the chapel of Our Lady of the Remedies.
