The Guadalquivir, not only determines the name of this municipality but that constitutes its reason of being. Located to the southwest of the capital and about 15 kilometers of this one, one is based in the region of the Salt marshes, being fundamental base of his economy, the culture of the rice.
The recent segregation of the municipality of Villafranco of the Guadalquivir, has made reduce the municipal surface him in 11,2 Km2 and the population in 6.022 inhabitants, with which in 1.996, the population of the municipality of the Puebla of the River ascended to 10,650 inhabitants, concentrated in but of 90% in the main body and responding the rest the scattered one.

| Although it is speculated on with an origin of the nucleus in the Age of the Bronze, the certain thing is that the rest of Latin time proliferate, in which the villa enjoyed times of prosperity. This one continued during the Muslim domination, during which front door went to Seville of most of the food; vegetables, fruits, hens, meat and fish. |

Once expelled the Muslims, Fernando III gave the farmhouse to the Council of Seville with views to that this organization was in charge to defend the fluvial accesses to the city using like operations center that territory, reason why the villa like the Guard was baptized. Alfonso X extended the concession reason why the Guard became Puebla or land to repoblar. To such effects, he distributed himself between 200 horsemen, emancipating themselves of the hispalense Council and acquiring own city council. The term was high and mighty with the inclusion of Villanueva, Old Puebla, the Tower, Abenmaffón and the three islands. |
| The original nucleus of city is located forming I make oval on the brink of madness extended to channel of the river occupying a high zone whose North limit is the Hermitage of San Sebastián and the South limit is the quarter of the Civil Guard, who occupies the place of one old strength from which the transit by the Guadalquivir was protected. The first expansions take place towards the west leaning in the street in which the present city council is located. Later, and supported in the passage of the highway expansions take place towards the north and the southwest of the nucleus seeing itself this one last one reinforced by the implantation of the sport zone the other side of the highway and modern districts with construction in height (districts of the Princes and the Salt marshes). The most recent expansions have taken place towards the south (around the Infantile Day-care center), towards the west (zone urbanized by the public Ground Company of Andalusia) and towards the north, around the water tanks.
|
The present urban structure responds to a large extent to a linear type whose predominant direction is the north-south. It is observed clearly in the configuration of the original nucleus and comes given by its adaptation the relief from the zone. Nevertheless, the layout of the highway that communicates the capital with the rice zones of the south and the recent growth of the city, leaning in this one, has done that this linear structure of the urban plot stays at the present time, although something but complicated due to the logical growth of the urban nucleus.
At monumental level, the Puebla of the River presents/displays among other places of interest the Church of Our Lady of Granada and already mentioned Hermitage of San Sebastián. This last one is located in the North end of the original nucleus and in its interior they emphasize the images of San Marcos and the Immaculate one, both of century XVII. As far as the Church of Our Lady of Granada, one is a construction to mudéjar of a single ship and to which it accompanies a ship with baroque bell tower.
