History of Guadalcanal
Plaza de EspaƱa - Guadalcanal

The municipality of Guadalcanal is located in the northern end of the county of Seville, being adjacent with the Autonomous Community of Extremadura. It belongs to the Sierra North sevillana district, including leaves of their term in the environment of the Natural Park of the same name. The urban nucleus is located in a valley formed among the Sierra of the Wind (to the north) and the Sierra of the Water (to the south).

The first human establishments in these lands are related with the Paleolithic period. After the step of the Iberian culture that denominates to the town Tereses, the Romans found the population of Sisapo, located in the roadway that Hispalis united with August Emerita. It is possible that at the end of the imperial period he/she already received the name of Canalia, denomination reutilizada for the Arab centuries later, prefixing him "Wad" like indicative of the presence of a river. The resulting form is Wad Al-Kanal. In this time the mining wealth of the underground are exploited, although the predominant function is the defensive, with a natural fortress for its position. In 1.241, the gentlemen of Santiago's Order conquer the town for the Crown of Castile. The king Fernando III the Saint, like prize, you the delivery to this institution. Soon after it, the municipality is believed and they are granted to its inhabitants own Jurisdiction.

The nucleus native is located to the population's Southwest, being constituted by the small and irregular apples that are around the biggest Square, where the City council, the church or the Market are located. The later developments go to the north and the southeast, along the respective exit roads toward Extremadura and toward Alanís. In these sectors the apples are of more size and they have lengthened forms. Everything has conferred it to the nucleus an approximately triangular morphology, with one of their sides (the oriental) more irregular.

The town is located in the layout of the highway that Alanís unites (for the southeast) and Extremadura (for the north), although the population's oriental variant has been built. The construction only reaches this beat in the sector sudoriental, where they are diverse public equipment (sport, educational). In parallel to the beat the line of the railroad circulates, something more far from the urban nucleus (for the east).

Among their constructions of artistic historical interest they highlight the remains of the Castle of the Ventosilla, the Concepción's churches, of Santa María of the Asunción and of Santa Ana, San Benito's hermitages and of Guaditoca, the country properties of The Motilla and Villavelviestre, as well as the Market, located in San Sebastian's old church.
