History of Gines

The municipality of Gines occupies one of the most privileged places from the area nearer aljarafeña to the capital hispalense, being limited its municipal term for those of Valencina of the Concepción, Espartinas, Bormujos and Castilleja of the Hill, being one of the municipalities of smaller surface of the county and that it had in 1.996 a population of 8.634 inhabitants, all them contained in the only entity of existent population in the municipality.

From remote times, the term you vió occupied by diverse residents like the tartesios to who the primitive foundation is attributed. The Romans, very later on, reutilizaron this town and Abnega called it. Nevertheless, this denomination changed in time of Caesar in that was rebaptized as Vergelium Iulii Genitoris or Vergentum Iulii Genius, as he/she affirms García of Diego like argument for the evolution toponímica until Gines. Scarce or null news are had of the Visigothic time that culminated with the Arab occupation at the beginning of the century VIII. These that restored the greatness of many renowned villages of Roman time, made the characteristic with the one that occupies us.

By the middle of the XIII century, the king Fernando III squatter the city and it rebaptizes her as Camero, name that was not accepted by the population that maintained the previous of Genis, of which derived until their current form. Once under the Castilian domain it was village realenga until it was granted to the lineage of the Zúñiga, what happened around the XIV century. In the XVI century it passed the one from the Guzmán to the one that you bound vió until the XIX century.

The population's nucleus native is located in the environment of the City council and the Church of Our Mrs. of Nativity, center from which 4 traditional roads that cross in foema of crosses arise. The most recent expansions multiply with a lot the surface of the nucleus native when being had converted the municipality in population's of the capital one of the most receiving.

The current urban structure is very complex, being only the old voyage of the highway of Huelva the only axis that, in some way, it articulates the urban space. To he/she unites it the diversity of the tipologías edificatorias used in the new expansions and the fact that each one of them has gone arising without a general planning of the city.

In spite of being a term of reduced dimensions, Gines conserves a satisfactory monumental endowment. Of their Treasury, the most outstanding are those of the Sacred Angel, of the XVIII century although very altered in the XIX century. It is also interesting the old Palacio of the Count of Gines, of final of the XVII one and become the following century.
