History of Castilleja del Campo

The municipality of Castilleja of the Field is located to the west of the river Guadiamar, in the western end of the county of Seville, being bordering with that of Huelva. Their population in 1.996 ascended 653 inhabitants. The urban nucleus settles on the north skirt of a hill, occupying the highest point in the same one the parochial church.

The first archaeological remains found in this town correspond to Roman time. During the Arab dominance he/she becomes a place of great strategic importance for the defense of Isbiliya (Seville), belonging to the district of the Field of Texada, to the one that continues attributed after the Christian conquest. Although it never ended up reaching a great population, yes he/she had importance from the economic point of view, for their mills of oil and their vineyards. The current denomination comes from the existence of some castle or defensive fortification in the surroundings of the alquería.

The town of Castilleja is developed in two differentiated urban sectors. The plot of the main sector is structured by three main roads that are developed from this to west adapted to the level curves. They are united in their oriental end, forming a trident with final in the highway that Castilleja unites with Carrión of the Grasses. The three mentioned roads are connected to each other by small streets, more narrow and with strong slopes. In their southern end, in front of the church, the population's only square rises. This sector maintains a great constructive coherence.

To the northwest of the same one another urban sector of smaller entity exists, developed in a lineal way along the axis of the highway N-431. It is from birth very later to the main sector, leaning on in the commercial demand of the traffic of the road and having constructions very unequal tipológicamente.

The barriers that limit the urban growth have relationship with the topography of the land. In the north area a very marked slope exists in address to the highway N-431, what has impeded the complete union of the two subnúcleos of Castilleja. They continue remaining some empty spaces between both. To the west of the highway of Carrión, the urban growth has been smaller than to the east.

Among their constructions of artistic historical interest it highlights San Miguel's Archangel Parochial Church (XVIII century, of Baroque style).
