Square of the Indiano

The municipality of Carrión of the Grasses is located to the west of the bed of the river Guadiamar, in the western end of the county of Seville, being bordering with the one of Huelva. In 1.996 it had a population of 2.257 inhabitants.

The historical origin of this establishment is in one Roman old villae or in a Muslim bound alquería to the agricultural exploitation of the surrounding field. Their take off begins after its Christian foundation, when the king Alfonso X the Sage, in the XIII century, grants the place to the gentlemen of the Order of Calatrava that baptize her as Carrión of the Garlics. In 1.261, the master of Calatrava it grants him/her population's jurisdiction, although this decision it doesn't charge form up to 1.334. The difficulties of the treasury real they advise Felipe II in 1.579 to separate the village of the Order of Calatrava and to sell it to D. Gonzalo of Grasses that it will be who gives the current name to the town. In 1.669, Carlos II grant the title of Marquises of Carrión to the family of the Grasses that you/they maintain it until the definitive suppression of the dominions in 1.812.

The urban nucleus is born for exclusively agricultural necessities, without defensive special concerns. It is located to half hillside, with natural escorrentía toward the near one stream Alcarayón that reflects parallel to an old narrow canyon real.

In the XIV century the development of the urban plot takes place around of the primitive nucleus and on the edge of the roads and roads cattle that drive to the farms and near towns. The growth is structured around five radial axes, being the most important the north-south, formed by the roads of Castilleja and of Piles. Another axis is the northwest-southeast, leaning in the exits to Camomile and Huévar, completing the it structures radial the one on the way to Fennels and Chucena (toward the west). These axes determine the main streets of the nucleus (where the most important houses are located), at the time that other secondary exist, traverse to the previous ones. In a principle, it is not built toward the water-course that supposes a natural barrier to the growth. This condition you posteriomente will be reinforced by the construction of the railroad that he/she reflects parallel to the stream, defining the nucleus for this area.

The I develop urban it will be minimum until principles of the XVIII century, reaching their maximum bench mark to final of the XIX one that is when it is definitively conformed the perimeter urban. The main structuring element during the century XX they have been the big communication infrastructures that they cross the term. The railroad reflects in northwest-southeast address to the south of the nucleus of population, supposing a limit difficultly salvageable for the construction and propitiating in their proximities the localization of industrial diverse facilities. Recently it has been substituted in their paper by the Freeway of Centennial (Seville-Huelva) V that crosses the term of this to west about 600 meters to the south of Carrión, and in whose suburbs have settled in the last ones years secondary activities and third (Polygon Industrial of Matilla).

The morphology of Carrión, with star's form or radial, it is fruit of the growth that has taken place historically throughout the different roads and highways of union with their environment. At the moment it presents bigger extension in sense north-south, the highway that Carrión unites taking advantage with Castilleja of the Field for the north and with Piles for the south. This axis has been the one that bigger development has had in second o'clock half of the XX century. The population's center of gravity it is the Latin American Square, located in this axis. The development toward the east it has been smaller for the existence of more slopes toward the hill there existent. The only expansion to the other side of the railroad it is the neighborhood of Cantarranas, located to the population's Southwest and united to her rest for the continuation of the street Juan Carlos I.

Among their constructions of historical artistic interest they highlight San Martin's Church (of Mudejar style) and the hermitage of Our Mrs. of the Consolation (XIX century, built on a building of the XIII century).
