History of Carmona

The municipality of Carmona, the second in surface of the county of Seville, it is located in the center of the same one, forming part of the districts of the Countryside and De la Vega. In 1.996 it had 25.266 inhabitants, most of which it resided in the main nucleus. To this term it also belongs the entity smaller than Guadajoz.

The man's presence in these lands goes back until prehistoric time, existing remains of paleolithic and neolithic towns. After the step of the cultures tartéssica and Phoenician, the village reaches great importance with the Carthaginians that fortify it and they call it Kar or Car. In the year 206 to.C., the town is integrated in the Roman domain. Important remains of the Muslim time are also conserved, during which Qarmuna ends up being capital of one of the taifas Kingdom. In 1.247, he/she surrenders to Fernando's Christian troops III the Saint that repopulates it and it endows it of own Jurisdiction. In 1.630, Felipe IV grant Carmona the title of City.

The municipal head settles on the most northern hill in Alcores, dominating the fertile vega of the river Corbones. It determined it from ancestral times their location, with a strategic magnificent situation from the military point of view.

In Roman time an authentic city already existed, with a surface of some 50 there are. The establishment was structured throughout an axis fundamental northeast-Southwest that connected the door of Seville with that of Córdoba and another that united the door of Marchena with that of Sedia. The intersection of the two axes (the forum) would be San Fernando's current Square. The Muslim dominance transforms the plot viaria until eliminating the second axis, reducing the doors of Sedia and of Marchena to mere connection wickets with the rural world.
The biggest mosque and the zoco constitute downtown that is surrounded of an irregular fence adapted to the topography of the land. Carmona conserves the character of strength until final of the Half Age. At the same time that the creation of San Pedro's suburb is developed, he/she goes disappearing that of San Mateo.
In the first half of the XX century a demographic strong growth takes place that translates you in a development in Southwest address, where the Boulevard (1.930) is ordered and toward the northwest, in the environment of the railroad station. In the years 60 quarters of official promotion are built with tipología of blocks, colmatando the platform of the Boulevard until the one escarps. To the west the quarter of the necropolis arises, and toward the northwest an important sector of housings autoconstruidas. Some industries also arise in the urban periphery and on the edge of the roads, what has produced a certain urbanistic disorder.
