In the Vega's district, to about 22 kilometers to the northeast of Seville, a veteran town of the county runs off with to 18 meters of altitude surrounded completely by the waters of the Guadalquivir. It is the village of Brenes whose total population ascended 10.623 inhabitants in 1.996.
The origins of this town go back to the Visigothic time, in which the history counts that there was a monastery Benedictine call Hard" "Waters, where he/she inhabited a nun that was high to the altars with the name of Santa Verenne, or Berenia. Its sepulchre center of popular pilgrimage was made, even during the Arab times.
The Romans denominated to this municipality with the name of Qulumbira that he/she mentions to the massive presence of doves in this place. Then the Arab put him the name of Billa Nuva, Al-Bahroyyin or alquería of the Bahries.
The current name of this town appears for the first time with the Reconquest, the Mozarabic ones called to the town "Berené". the name Possibly comes from "Verene": a nun that inhabited a monastery and that it was had in opinion of sanctity. After their death the place of its sepulcher became center of pilgrimage of such a magnitude that, even under the Arab domain, the Christian of the peninsula continued going to visit her. Of this religious phenomenon it derived the name of the town. "Brenes" appears in the Distribution of the XVIII century, belonging to the Infante gift so much Manufactures like to the Town council of the Cathedral, so far in that the "dominions" were suppressed.
It is calculated that the conquest for Fernando's armies II would have place hacia1246 or 1247. Brenes surrendered to the King from Castile for a vassalage pact. Later on, Brenes was given by Alfonso X to D. Fadrique, and later, it would become property of the cathedral of Seville.
They exist vestiges that relate this town with an inferior dense establishment of the paleolithic one, becoming Celtiberian territory later on and, later, Roman. In some of these cases it was fluvial factories for the one packed of two-handled jars of wine and oil, being others as villages of rest and recess.
Toward the century VI become Visigothic, being born as historical entity. The Reconquest of Brenes took place in 1.247 for the king Fernando III in its victorious itinerary it has more than enough lands hispalenses. The place surrendered to the Infante Don Fadrique, the conqueror's son after whose death the Town council of the Cathedral of Seville, was made with Brenes. The urban nucleus, evolves starting from a historical helmet perfectly defined in whose center the square is located in the one that the City council of the village is located. A first expansion is carried out being overcome the historical beat in all addresses, but especially, in the southeast area, in address to the railroad. The expansions but recent they have been carried out in the northeast, in the west and in the Southwest where you/they have left locating the neighborhoods but recent.
The urban structure presents different characteristic in function of the area of the nucleus in that we are. This way, the historical helmet presents an urban plot that is characterized by long parallel streets with northeast address - Southwest, configuring wide lengthened apples. Lastly, some of the most recent expansions present a structure characterized by isolated blocks or embedded with wide pedestrian streets among these.
The monumental facet of Brenes is manifested mainly in its religious constructions, as San Sebastian's Church and, mainly, that of the Immaculate Concepción. This last one exhibits Mudejar style of the XV century, and it is conformed by three ships with five tracts and plane testero, although the works didn't conclude up to 1.758. The tower, however, is of the original stage although remodeled in the XVIII one.

According to Juan José Antequera Luengo:
At least from 1847, the City council of Brenes comes stamping in the left documents of its chancellery a stamp of ink that, with the usual one it forms oval and showing in their bordura the inscriptions accredited of the municipality and organism to which belongs, takes like extracted figure of the heraldry a tree crashed of a tulft or, maybe, of one it whistles, the one which already in the last third of the XIX century he/she appears with a much clearer design.
Converted the stamp in shield, such furniture, in their colors and
terrasados, goes on silver, being stamped the heraldry with marquisal crown, and being stuffed in a carte of parchment in tatters, of gules. |
