The urban nucleus of Alcala of the River is located in the noroccidental zone of the province and its location comes clearly determined by its location in next to the Guadalquivir. The urban nucleus, as well as most of their municipal term, are integrated in the Depression of the Guadalquivir, one of the estructurantes basic units of the province, along with Brown Mountain range and the South Mountain range.
The total surface of municipal term is of 82.42 Km2 and counted on a total population of 9,368 inhabitants in 1.996. To the municipality other three created population centers correspond in addition during the Fifties from the development to the Regable Area of the Viar. Esquivel, San Ignacio of the Viar and the Viar were constructed according to two criteria of implantation in the territory: its suitability for the control of the irrigated land surfaces and its location next to communication routes.
Like all the hills and terraces of the right margin of the Guadalquivir the plateau in which is Alcala had to inhabit from the Calcolítico, impression corroborated by the archaeological rest found there. The foundation of Ilipa Magna, Roman name of the city, is closely tie to the Guadalquivir and the position that the location had as terrestrial crossroad as much as fluvial, to which its situation privileged to the defense of the floods is united.
Of this form, the Guadalquivir river is the fundamental element in the configuration and situation of the nucleus. The meander that crosses the municipality has singular characteristics, since, of a part, it is the limit where the river happens to be laughs and they are let feel, therefore, the tides. On the other hand, the relief of the right margin models an escarpment whose superior level, as already it has been indicated, is safe from the floods. It is on this point on which the urban nucleus is based.
The Historical Helmet of the city, is delimited by its zone the West, the escarpment of the river and the zone This, by the Avenue of Andalusia forming an enclosure walled with almond form, whose successive expansions have been taken place in direction This. Between the Avenue of Andalusia and the street of the Lowest part of valley, it crossed a stream, reason why the first expansions had to take place to the other side of the same one, in the zone that at the moment occupy the zones of the streets Orchards, Era High and Way of Guillena.
Once tubed the stream, the zone of the street Lowest part of valley is taken care by constructions of industrial and farming character of title tipología very different from the bordering zones. The most recent expansions continue in direction This until highway C 431, barrier that is surpassed during the decade of the 80.
In the present urban structure that presents/displays Alcala of the River, they are differentiated two urban elements clearly, of a part, the historical helmet and the first expansions that present/display an anarchical road structure, adapted to the relief and the almendrada form of the walled enclosure original. Of another part, the zone nearest the present layout of highway of local or regional importance 431, presents/displays a road structure recently orthogonal origin of a planned and executed growth but.
As far as concerns the monumental and artistic content, Alcala of the River counts on a splendid building of style to mudéjar that, initiated his construction at the beginning of century XIV, it presents/displays reforms and added until century XVIII. One is the Church of Santa Maria of Asuncio'n. In this same section of religious architecture, the chapel of San Gregorio Osetano was built by San Fernando and dedicated by Kings Cato'licos in 1.460.
